7 Tips for Curling Short Hair

Woman With Curly Hair

You have always dreamed of those with naturally curly hair. It always looks so effortless and chic, like they just rolled out of bed and into the best hair day of their lives.

So after watching a few tutorials, you gather everything you need: a curling iron, some hair clips, and a can-do attitude.

But as you start wrapping small sections of your hair around the iron, you realise that something is not quite right. Your hair is not falling into soft, romantic curls like in the videos.

Instead, it’s forming tight ringlets that seem to be getting tighter and tighter with each curl. You soon realise that you may have made a mistake – your hair is too short to achieve the look you were going for.

But don’t be discouraged!

Just because your hair is on the shorter side doesn’t mean you can’t rock a head of gorgeous curls.

So here are the top 7 tips to help you create curls with short hair!

1. Find the right curling iron for your hair type

If you have short, fine hair, then you will want to use a curling iron with a smaller barrel. This will help you create tighter curls that will last all day long.

If you have short, thick hair, then you will want to use a curling iron with a larger barrel. This will help you create looser curls that will have a more natural look.

The last thing you want to do is use an iron that is too hot for your hair type. This can damage your hair and leave you with frizzy, unruly locks.

2. Always prep your hair before curling

This means that you should always start with clean, dry, and styled hair. If your hair is dirty or oily, the curls will not hold as well.

If your hair is wet, it will be more difficult to curl and the curls will not last as long. It is also important to use a heat protectant before curling your hair.

This will help to protect your hair from the heat of the curling iron and keep it looking healthy and shiny.

3. Section your hair off into manageable pieces

This will help you to curl your hair more evenly and prevent any accidental burns. You can use clips or simply divide your hair into small sections with your fingers.

Start with the bottom layer of your hair and work your way up. Curl each section in the same direction so that all of your curls are flowing in the same direction.

4. Use a heat protectant spray before curling your hair

This will help to protect your hair from the heat of the curling iron and keep it looking healthy and shiny.

Spray each section of hair before you curl it. Be sure to hold the can about 6-8 inches away from your head so that you don’t end up with greasy, limp curls.

5. Curl small sections of your hair at a time

This will help you to achieve more defined and long-lasting curls. Take a small section of hair and wrap it tightly around the curling iron.

Be sure not to curl the very ends of your hair, as this can make them look dry and damaged. Hold the curl in place for a few seconds before releasing it.

6. Hold the curl in place for a few seconds after curling it

This will help to set the curl and prevent it from falling out throughout the day. You can use your fingers to lightly hold the curl in place or you can clip it up with a small hair clip.

Do this for each section of hair until all of your hair is curled.

Once you are finished, you can brush through your hair lightly with your fingers to create softer, more romantic curls or you can leave them as is for a more defined and polished look.

7. Use hairspray to set the curls and keep them in place all day long

After you are finished curling your hair, be sure to use a light hairspray to set the curls. This will help them to last all day long, even in humid weather.

Be sure not to use too much hairspray, as this can make your hair look crunchy and unnatural.

Embrace your gorgeous short curly hair

If you follow these tips, you’ll be sure to achieve gorgeous, long-lasting curls – even with short hair! So don’t be discouraged if your hair is on the shorter side – you can still rock a head of beautiful curls!
